About Course
The Intermediate Synthesis course builds on the foundational synthesis skills gained in Intro to Synthesis, expanding into advanced methods, hardware integration, and sound design strategies. Students will explore semi-modular and modular synthesis using hardware synths, dive deep into FM, physical modeling, and granular synthesis, and apply these techniques to create complex, performance-ready sounds. Emphasis is placed on understanding the underlying synthesis architecture, hands-on patching, and integrating hardware with digital environments.
- Modular Synthesis
Learn modular signal flow, CV control, and patching on semi-modular hardware and Reaktor Blocks.
- FM Synthesis
Work with operators, algorithms, harmonic and inharmonic tones, and hybrid FM techniques.
- Physical Modeling
Apply Karplus–Strong and waveguide synthesis to emulate acoustic instruments and create experimental textures.
- Granular Synthesis
Manipulate sound with grains, time-stretching, and sample-based granulation for atmospheres and rhythms.
- Hardware–Software Integration
Combine semi-modular synths, Reaktor Blocks, and software instruments for hybrid sound design.
- Advanced Patch Design
Recreate, analyze, and push synthesis techniques into custom, performance-ready sounds.
